Big Chalkers: Do NOT Color in the Lines

Artists: CJ & Scout
Implemented @: Penn 2 Plaza

Why do we stop drawing? Odds are we all picked up a crayon, marker what have you at some point in our childhood. I think its a requirement in kindergarten. So whats up downtown office workers? Did you develop an allergy?

Project: Big Chalkers from PlayPhilly on Vimeo.

We have a theory. Small hands like things that fit right in there, and can move at great speeds creating whatever is flowing though our tiny little brains. It, in fact, brings us joy to be able to visually display the images inside of our head. Think about it. A child often has trouble communicating their feelings, emotions. Happiness, fear, sadness, all come out on paper with a crayon is in hand. So if we proportionally scale a crayon from a childs hands to an adults, which is a very complex formula that requires some processing power from Deep Blue, maybe just maybe we can get adults to express themselves once more.

Or.  We end up create the coolest looking bedposts ever. Either way, when you see these little big guys laying around, pick it up and have a go. We will post locations of the Big Chalkers as soon as they are out there. Retweet em, favorite em. We’ll be watching.

For those interested we’ve posted some pics of their fabrication, pay no mind to CJ and his, um, cones.

The first installation in Penn 2 was an immense success, and that is putting it lightly. The sheer joy we experienced cannot be put into words. Seeing the laughter, the fun on peoples faces. People thanking us for “bringing out the kid” or “returning me to my youth” could not have fallen on more grateful hearts. When Scout and I began this project, our goal was to find those moments of pure joy, the pure joy we had when we were carefree as children. We made memories. Climbing trees, swinging in the breeze, flying kites. Those memories inturn shape who we are. This one, I cannot tell you, how it has completely changed my outlook on many levels.
