Who We Are

PlayPhilly was started by two masters of industrial design (MiD) students at University of the Arts: Giacomo Ciminello and Kristin Freese. As part of their Master Thesis, they will study, document, and quantify the benefits play has on social interactions, civic morale and public spaces in Center City Philadelphia.

Kristin Freese grew up in the small town of Glasgow, Mo. Her parents, aside from running the local funeral home and teaching history, owned a small antique store and restored old homes as a hobby. It was on these job sites and in the antique store workshop that Kristin discovered her love of quality craft and design.

Throughout elementary and high school she defined herself as an artist by winning numerous painting and drawing competitions. In college she studied art and design abroad in Italy and eventually received her Bachelors Degree for interior design at Kansas University 2005. Freese also achieved an emphasis in Architecture from KU and went on to work as an architect assistant at Millennium Design Build at the Lake of the Ozarks, MO. Her last solo art show, Bare, exhibited during Kansas City’s ‘First Friday’s’ Art Festivals, April 2006. Currently Freese is obtaining a Graduate degree in industrial design at the University of the Arts. Lately her focus has been on eye-tracking, social design and sustainability. She hopes to eventually work for a non-profit organization improving the quality of life for people and the planet.
